Teeth cleaning and exams

A routine cleaning and exam removes buildup your toothbrush misses and lets the dentist find small problems before they grow.

What is a teeth cleaning and exam?

A teeth cleaning and exam is a routine checkup visit. The dental team removes plaque and hardened buildup from your teeth, and Dr. Wael Sadek checks your teeth, gums, and mouth for problems. Regular visits help catch cavities and gum disease early, when they are often simpler to treat.

Brushing and flossing at home remove soft plaque. Once plaque hardens into tartar, a toothbrush cannot remove it. A professional cleaning reaches the spots that home care misses, such as along and just under the gumline.

Signs it is time for a visit

  • It has been a while since your last cleaning or exam.
  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss.
  • You have bad breath that does not go away.
  • A tooth feels sensitive to hot, cold, or sweets.
  • You notice a rough spot, a chip, or a dark spot on a tooth.
  • Your gums look red or puffy, or seem to be pulling back.

Bleeding gums are a common sign of gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. Many people feel no pain in the early stages. That is why checkups matter even when your mouth feels fine.

What happens at the visit

  1. Health history. We ask about your health, your medicines, and any concerns you have about your teeth.
  2. Imaging when needed. The office uses 3D scanning and digital imaging. X-rays are not taken at every visit. The dentist decides based on your needs.
  3. Cleaning. Plaque and tartar are removed with small dental tools. Then your teeth are polished.
  4. Flossing. We floss between your teeth and can show you an easier way to do it at home.
  5. Exam. Dr. Sadek checks each tooth, your gums, your bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth, including a check for signs of oral cancer.
  6. Your plan. He explains what he found in plain words. If you need treatment, he walks you through the options before anything is done.

After your cleaning

Most people go back to their normal day right away. Your gums may feel a little tender for a day, especially if there was a lot of buildup. Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth once a day. Cutting back on sugary drinks and snacks also helps protect your teeth.

How often you need a cleaning depends on your mouth. Some people do well with a visit every six months. People with gum disease or frequent cavities may need visits more often. The dentist will suggest a schedule that fits you.

Cost factors

The cost of a cleaning and exam depends on the type of cleaning you need, whether imaging is taken, and your insurance plan. Many dental plans cover routine checkups, but plans differ. We accept dental insurance, so call us to check whether we work with your plan. We also accept CareCredit, which can spread larger treatment into monthly payments, along with cards and tap-to-pay. Ask for an estimate before any treatment. You can read more on our insurance and payment page.

Questions patients ask

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Many people do well with a cleaning and exam every six months. People with gum disease, a history of cavities, or certain health conditions may need visits more often. After your exam, Dr. Sadek will suggest a schedule that fits your mouth and explain why.

Does a teeth cleaning hurt?

Most people find a cleaning comfortable. You may feel scraping or pressure, and a sensitive spot can feel sharp for a moment. If you have a lot of buildup or tender gums, tell us. We can slow down and talk with you about ways to make the visit easier.

Will I need X-rays at every visit?

No. X-rays and other digital imaging are taken based on your needs, not on one fixed schedule for everyone. The dentist looks at your age, your dental history, and your risk for cavities or gum disease before deciding which images, if any, are needed.

Does insurance cover cleanings?

Many dental plans cover routine cleanings and exams, but each plan is different. We accept dental insurance. Plans change often, so call (407) 850-0133 before your visit to check whether we work with your plan and what it may cover.
